Put the same item on two differently built services and you get two different outcomes. Not because one audience has better taste, but because the plumbing differs. Whether something spreads is mostly a property of the network it is dropped into, and only partly a property of the thing itself.

Forwarding
The single biggest lever is how much work it takes to pass something on.
A one-tap reshare that keeps the item intact produces enormous, fast, low-effort spread. Nothing has to be understood to be forwarded; the cost of forwarding approaches zero, so items travel far past the audience that gets them.
Where forwarding requires downloading, re-uploading or retyping, every hop costs effort. Fewer things travel, they travel slower, and they mutate at every step, because a person who has to remake it will change it. Sites without a forwarding button therefore produce more variants and fewer copies. Sites with one produce the reverse.
Whether attribution survives the hop
Some forwarding mechanisms carry the original poster with them. Some strip everything, so what arrives is a bare file with no lineage.
This one decision determines whether the platform's history is traceable at all. On services that preserve the chain, you can walk backwards. On services that do not, items arrive as orphans, and later attempts to establish who made what are guesswork about an audience that never recorded it. What survives the hop is exactly what a later provenance claim can rest on, and where nothing survives there is nothing to rest on. Persistence
Whether posts stay put shapes what people are willing to say.
Permanent, searchable archives make everything quotable years later, which encourages care, hedging and self-editing, and makes the record rich for anyone studying it afterwards. Content that expires encourages looseness and experiment, and leaves almost nothing behind. A culture built on expiring media can be enormous and simultaneously invisible to future historians, which is the trade behind ephemerality as a design choice rather than an accident. Identity
Real-name, persistent pseudonym and full anonymity produce three different cultures out of the same population.
Real names attach reputation, which raises the cost of being wrong and lowers the willingness to be strange. Persistent pseudonyms allow a reputation that is separate from the offline person, which tends to produce the strongest community norms: there is something to lose, but not your job. Anonymity removes reputation entirely, which lowers the cost of both invention and cruelty, and makes attribution of anything to anyone essentially impossible. Read the table as a set of trade-offs rather than a scorecard. Every row buys something with something.
Why "it went viral" is a claim about the network
Spread requires a cheap forwarding mechanism, an audience arranged so that forwarding reaches new people, and a ranking system that rewards early motion. Remove any of the three and the same item goes nowhere. This is why identical material can fail repeatedly and then travel, and why the story that a particular thing was destined to spread is almost always written afterwards by someone who saw only the successful attempt.
It also means the question "why did this spread?" is usually better asked as "what in this system moves things, and did this item satisfy it?"
Reading a platform you do not use
Before drawing any cultural conclusion about a service, establish: how forwarding works and whether it preserves attribution; whether posts persist; whether identity is real, pseudonymous or anonymous; whether the feed is ranked; whether replies are threaded; whether the audience is a follower graph, a topic feed or a closed room; and what the size and format limits are.
Answer those seven and most of what looks like inexplicable native behavior turns out to be the predictable output of the design.
Common questions
Do the mechanics really matter more than the community?
They set the boundaries the community operates inside. Two communities with the same members on differently built services will behave differently, which is a strong hint about where the causation sits.
What happens when a platform changes a lever?
The culture changes with it, usually faster than people expect and with loud complaint. Changes to forwarding, ordering and persistence are the ones that produce visible upheaval, and the rules for dating one are set out under platform timelines.
Why do some platforms lose their whole history?
